3D Printing Prototypes with the Bambu Lab X1C

From STL file to finished print — slicing in Bambu Studio, choosing materials, and picking up your print from the lab.

Before You Print

  • Make sure your model is watertight (no holes in the mesh). Use Meshmixer or Blender to check.
  • Export as STL or 3MF from your CAD tool (Fusion 360, Rhino, Blender, etc.)
  • Book a printer time slot via the Equipment page — walk-in is fine if all 3 printers show green

Step 1: Slice in Bambu Studio

  1. Download Bambu Studio (free at bambulab.com)
  2. Select printer: X1 Carbon | Nozzle: 0.4mm
  3. Drag in your STL
  4. Choose a process preset:
    • 0.20mm Standard — good for most prototypes
    • 0.12mm Fine — for detailed surfaces (2× slower)
  5. Material: PLA for most work; TPU for flexible parts; PETG for humidity/heat resistance
  6. Hit Slice and check the preview for any issues

Step 2: Send to Printer

  1. Connect Bambu Studio to the lab’s LAN — ask staff for the IP
  2. Click Print — the printer will start automatically
  3. You’ll get an email when done (enter your Andrew ID in the job notes)

Step 3: Finishing

  • Let the print cool for 5 min before removing from the plate
  • Use the flex plate — bend it gently and the print pops off
  • Supports: pull off with pliers, sand lightly with 220-grit
