Haeyoung Kim

Assistant Professor

Haeyoung Kim is an Assistant Professor at the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University. As a designer, researcher, and educator, she explores the connections between objects, culture, space, materials, and technology, and their influence on human interaction.

Her research has two facets: creating human-centered interactive learning objects and installations that foster social engagement through sensors, physical computing, IoT, and AI; and redefining material paradigms — particularly responsive materials — to establish novel design frameworks for wearables and products using 3D/4D printing, lamination, knitting, and weaving.

Before CMU, she was a Research Associate at MIT Design Lab and a designer at Tellart, an experience design studio. She earned her Master of Design Studies in Technology from Harvard University and holds a BFA in Industrial Design from RISD.
